THE INVENTION OF THE WATCH

1571 - Some historians consider the gift given by Robert Dudley, the Earls of Leicester, to Queen Elizabeth I to be the ancestor of the wristwatch. The gift was described to be a clock full of diamonds suspended by a bracelet that could be worn as a bracelet.
1623 - Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher and mathematician, as well as the inventor of the calculating machine was born in June 19, 1623. It is said of him that he wore his pocket watch fastened to his wrist.
1772 - The Almanach du Dauphin refers to watch-bracelets and ring-clocks of a Parisian watchmaker in the Rue de Buci.
1790 - Some account books from Jacquet-Droz et Leschot in 1790 describes "a watch that can be attached to a bracelet."


XIX century - While private collections and museums have numerous ring-watches of various eras, the earliest known surviving bracelet-watches date back to the XIX c. These watches were attached to a ribbon or a bracelet studded with precious stones, with visible dials, for rich ladies.

 

1800-1810 - One of these bracelet-watch was made between this dates and signed (Pierre) Gregson à Paris (2). A dial large and perfectly legible was fixed in a gold bracelet, further proof that the clocks of this period were functional as they were decorative

1806 - Nitot, jeweler of Napoleon I delivered to Princess Augusta of Bavaria, wife of Eugenio de Beauharnais, two bracelets with emeralds and pearls. In a built-in Nitot a clock and in the other a calendar showing the date and month, both with visible dials.

1810 - On June 8, 1810, Carolina Murat, Queen of Naples, makes an order with Abraham-Louis Breguet for a bracelet with a dial. It was mounted on a bracelet of gold threads.

1868 - Patek Philippe et Cie. Created a rectangular clock mounted on a three-part bracelet for the Hungarian countess Kosewitz (6), the first of a series.

1904 - Santos Dumont, aviation pioneer asks his friend Louis Cartier to create a wrist watch to use to drive in his flying machines. So far the male watches were mostly a small pocket, since the launch of the "Santos" model in you can consider a production mass for men too, which first went on sale in 1911.
